What Does TGIF mean in Children Church Ministry?

Thank God It's Friday! (TGIF). It's the weekend again but for some of us like myself we still have to work on both Fridays and Saturdays. Nevertheless, the acronym TGIF has a nice feeling of the weekend break after a long hard work week. There is even a restaurant in the USA called TGIF. Those of us we serve in the children ministry and have a job at the same time, the weekend does not necessarily mean we rest and have our break. I know for a fact our Sunday School teachers use much of their weekend hours to prepare for their Sunday classes.

What does TGIF mean in today's children ministry? It could still mean Thank God It's Friday but someone cleaverly gave another meaning when it applies to our children. T is for Twitter, G for Google, I for Iphone or Ipad and F for Facebook. It's no more just a fun weekend at the beach or at the zoo with family or even meeting up with friends. Our children's lives are now very entwind with the non-tangible or virtual reality. At 42 years of age as of this writing I love the connectedness of the internet revolution and I believe it is our job to stay abreast of the technology so we stay relevant to our children whom God entrust to us both our own and those we have influence over at church.

The purpose of setting our website ChildrenChurchMinistry.com is the start of our recognition of the above reality. Some of us avoid even using our emails to stay in touch. We give the excuse we cannot learn or our brain cannot store any more new information. I am not encouraging you to be internet savvy just yet, but to understand all the benefits it comes from being able to live in the Internet Age. Amidst all the bad influence and vices the internet brings, let us embrace the good. It is my opinion that if we do not start to familiarize ourselves with the technolgy that so entrench the lives of today's kids, we may find ourselves in more ways than one, soon irrevalent.

Facebook and Social Media Dangerous for Children

Social media and the internet exposes our children to a world of pedophilia, child erotica, child pornography and the evolution of online crimes. So the question is how can a parent protect their children, other than by disconnecting the internt modem? I believe parents need to be familiar with technology and its problems.

Cyberspace gives children a false sense of security. Parents you might as well get this right the first time: the internet is not safe and you cannot stop your children from using the internet.  Please don't go frantic and cut off all your internet service. Parents need to educate themselve and work with their children just like using an encylopedia. You can see taboo and obsense inappropriate information in a dictionary too but how to react and respond and teach your kids will be very important.

There is nothing private about the internet. This may be news to many parents but social networking site profiles, even if marked to be visible only by friends, can be accessed by anyone going through a search engine, such as Google, even if it is marked private the information can still be accessed. So if you think your info is private on the social media, you are mistaken.

But why is cyberspace so dangerous for children. You see computers are at home where mom and dad is present. Even the front door is closed and locked but because while they are warned about strangers coming into the house. However, in cyberspace they are not warned about strangers who they meet. Many of these strangers are called "friends" they have yet to meet. How is a parent going to teach their children to be saft if they do not understand this difference when meeting strangers in real life and cyberspace?

Cell phones and digital cameras can also lead to problems.  Pedophiles "use pornography to lower the inhibitions of the kids and make it seem all right. Webcams can be a big problem and I personally disable my webcam unless I need to use it. Webcam broadcasts can be recorded and posted to pedophile site including Facebook, MySpace or Zenga. What the kids don't realize is, when you post the stuff there, it is there for world to see.

Here are a short list of danger signs you can teach your children about:

  • Your child received text and instant messages from people she does not know.
  • Your child's picture is used to blackmail him or her. Predators try to twist it up so that you will think you'll be in trouble.
  • Your child received a special gift or invitation requesting her to pick it up in person.

So what could you do if you are not sure. Kids if you are not sure what to do, do the  smart thing and show or tell your parents.
If you are parents, try to be proactive. Ask your kids to show you what Facebook is. Be open and honest and show concern but don't freak out when you see something shocking.

Children Ministry Team Pledge

I am not sure why commitment is so hard to come by even in Christian circles. Maybe its just us, but finding new teachers who will stay committed hard to come by indeed. Don't get me wrong, we have great teachers who have been with us for over 10 years and we appreciate them so much. Below is a ministry pledge sample, which by no means make your ministry workers stay committed but it is a start to help guide Christian workers to understand we are involved in a special sacred ministry. It is not just another job.

By the grace of God, I promise to do my best in the following:

1. In My Relationship with God:
A. I will pursue personal spiritual growth through spiritual disciplines such as daily Quiet Time, Bible Study, prayer, etc.
B. I will seek to live a godly life which honours Jesus Christ in every aspect of my life.
C. I will be teachable and approach God’s Word and His people with humility.

2. In My Relationship to Gospel Light Christian Church:
A. I agree with the doctrinal statement of your church.
B. I fully support the vision and mission of your church.
C. I will support the ministries of your church by my regular attendance and in financial giving.
D. I will promote unity and seek to resolve disagreements biblically.
E. I understand that my service in the Children’s Ministry is for a 12-month period (2-year commitment for Director, Superintendents and Assistant Superintendents) beginning the first Sunday of the year. Whether my appointment is made then, or later in the year, I understand that it automatically terminates with the last Sunday of that year.

3. In My Relationship To My Class:
A. I will be an example to my students in speech and conduct (1 Tim 4 :12), earnestly seeking to win them for God and grow them in Christ (Prov. 11:30).
B. I will be regular and punctual in attendance; and in case of unavoidable absence, give notice thereof as far in advance as possible (I Cor 4:2).
C. I will faithfully make diligent preparation for the lessons and my other duties each week (2 Tim 2:15).
D. I will help my students to understand the importance of having a vibrant, close relationship with Jesus Christ, understand and love the Bible, apply truth to life and obey God’s Word. (Acts 17:28; Psalms 119:16).
E. I will attend the Children’s Ministry planning meetings and training classes to the best of my ability.
F. I will participate actively in the plans and activities of GLCC and the Children’s Ministry (1 Cor. 3:9).

With the help of God, I will do my utmost to keep this pledge. Amen.

Article 4 of Church Constitution
Doctrine
The Church holds to the great fundamental doctrines of the historic Christian faith, namely:
4.1 We believe in the plenary divine inspiration of the Scriptures in the original languages, their consequent inerrancy and infallibility and as the Word of God, the supreme and final authority in faith and life;
4.2 We believe in the one true eternal triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit;
4.3 We believe in the essential deity and the real and proper, but sinless humanity of our Lord Jesus Christ;
4.4 We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, and is true God and true man;
4.5 We believe in the Lord Jesus Christ's substitutionary, expiatory death, in that He gave His life "a ransom for many";
4.6 We believe in the Lord Jesus Christ's resurrection from the dead in the same body in which He was crucified and the second coming of the same Lord Jesus Christ, bodily, in power and great glory;
4.7 We believe that salvation is the effect of the sovereign grace of God in regeneration by the Holy Spirit and the Word, through faith, not of works;
4.8 We believe in the everlasting bliss of the saved, and the everlasting suffering of the lost;
4.9 We believe in the spiritual unity of all redeemed by the precious blood of the Lord Jesus Christ;
4.10 We believe in the necessity of maintaining, according to God's Word the purity of the Church, in doctrine and life; and still believing the Apostles' Creed to be a statement of Scriptural truth, we therefore incorporate in these articles of faith.
4.11 We believe that it is unbiblical for a female to hold office as Pastor, Elder or Deacon in the Church.
